The aim of the Church of England's Ministry among Deaf people is to provide
opportunities for Deaf people to worship, to learn, and to receive
pastoral care in sign language. The Minister in the Deaf Community,
the Revd Bob Shrine, is Deaf himself.
We have an informal service of Holy Communion in sign language in Wakefield Deaf Centre,
7 South Parade, at 11.00 am on the first Thursday of each month. One of our aims
is to set up study groups for Deaf people who are interested in learning more about God,
Jesus, the bible, the Christian faith, and the Church. The Minister leads Baptisms,
Weddings and Funerals in sign language, For Deaf people who wish to have access to spoken
Baptisms, Weddings and Funerals in parish churches we can try to provide an interpreter,
although this cannot be guaranteed. The Minister will visit Deaf people in their homes,
and can visit schools that have Deaf children. He also makes occasional visits to the Deaf
Clubs in Wakefield and Castleford. The Chaplain will also visit churches to preach and
give Deaf Awareness presentations.
