999 BSL
999 BSL is a service that connects you to British Sign Language Interpreters remotely through an app or a web-based platform, who then will relay the conversation with the call handler and emergency authorities. This service has been set up so that no deaf person will be excluded when they need to make an emergency call, therefore saving lives.
The 999 BSL service is for emergency situations only, for an example:
- if someone is seriously injured
- life is at risk
- being in danger or harm
- a serious offence is in progress or has just been committed.
For less urgent situations, please use Police 101 (wherever possible) or NHS111 through SignVideo – not 999 BSL, unless there is an emergency.
emergencySMS
The emergencySMS service is an add on to the existing 999 services that are available in the UK.
To use the Emergency SMS service, text ‘register’ to 999 from your mobile phone before an emergency occurs. Once registered, you can text 999 in an emergency, including details about the incident, who you need (ambulance, police, fire, or coastguard), and your precise location. This service is for when you cannot make a voice call and should not be used for non-emergencies.
How to register
- Open a new text message on your mobile phone.
- Type the word ‘register’ in the message body.
- Send the text to 999.
- Follow the instructions that are sent back to you.
How to use in an emergency
- Open a new text message.
- In the “To” box, type 999.
- In the message body, clearly state:
- Who you need: Ambulance, police, fire, or coastguard.
- What is happening: Briefly describe the emergency (e.g., “Person collapsed,” “Car accident”).
- Where it is: Provide the exact location, including road name, postcode, or nearby landmark.
Important information
- You must be registered to use this service.
- This service is intended for situations where you are unable to make a voice call.
- Only use the service for real emergencies.
- This service cannot be used from abroad.
